Worlds most expensive skating costume made by Rodarte

Johnny Weir in custom Rodarte

I never thought i’d be mentioning Rodarte and the Olympics in the same sentence, but weirder things have happened.

(The Olympics start February 12th, 2010)

The sisters Rodarte have really been “branching” out in the past few months, they made a film, did a collab with Target, and now have dressed 13 olympians for a photo shoot due out this Sunday for the NY Times Magazine, shot by Ryan McGinley. Olympians in this shoot include snowboarders Kelly Clark and Hannah Teter, ski jumper Anders Johnson, skaters Evan Lysacek, Rachel Flatt, and Keauna McLaughlin + Rockne Brubaker.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this was a new niche for designers.

Setting: Ryan Seacrest walks up to the red carpet at the Olympics to ask Olympians about their fashion choices.

Ryan: Hello from Vancouver, we are standing with figure skater, Rachel Flatt. Great costume, who are you wearing?

Rachel: Sonia Rykiel made this especially for me… Check out the next few days as I wear custom designs from her and skates designed by Pierre Hardy !

What I am referencing to is this article I read in NY Magazine today:

“Rodarte made outfits for thirteen Olympians participating in the Games beginning next week. Ryan McGinley shot the sportsmen and women in their custom knits for The New York Times Magazine coming out this Sunday.

Rodarte designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy said all the costumes are quite different: “We built the looks knowing that the athletes needed to be able to keep the same range of motion in our clothing as they have in their normal uniform.” Here you see Johnny Weir, mid-axel. Marvel at how the spidery knits cling to his curves like foam to the lid of your Starbucks cup, his captivating form in near-perfect suspension, the wrist flicked just so. A photographer once told us that you know you’ve made it when magazines don’t feel the need to run a clear shot of your face, feeling rather that just your arm or blurred eyes speak loudly enough to the world. And so Johnny Weir arrives as another hump day draws to a close.”

I cannot wait to see the spread on Sunday!
