Last week the Truffle attended the L.A. premiere of ’42,’ the new Jackie Robinson biopic from Warner Bros. starring Harrison Ford and Chadwick Boseman, with executives from Marriott and Marriott Rewards who sponsored the premiere (held at the Chinese Theater) and after party (held across the street in a parking lot transformed to look like Ebbets Field in Brooklyn).
The LA premiere of ’42’, which topped the weekend’s box office with a gross of $27.3 million, was sponsored by Marriott Rewards, the interchangeable points program that allows hotel guests to earn points in one property and spend them in another (properties include: Autograph Collection, Ritz-Carlton Hotels, J.W. Marriott, Bulgari Hotels & Resorts, EDITION, Courtyard by Marriott, Residence Inn by Marriott, Renaissance, Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott). They also recently started a concierge service.
As a sponsoring partner of the film, Marriott ran a personal welcome message from ’42’ star Chadwick Boseman and the ’42’ trailer in Marriott hotel rooms around the world. An online baseball game contest was also conducted and the winner received a trip to the L.A. premiere. Marriott hosted dozens of special screenings of the film, some with Bill Marriott himself, the company’s chairman whose father founded the hotel brand, and a Washington DC native, where the company is based.
APA, the L.A.-based external entertainment agency hired by Marriott for special projects, also organized a trip for Marriott executives to see a taping of the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and a stop at ink on Melrose.
’42’ is a Jackie Robinson biographical picture from Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures released April 12th, just in time for Jackie Robinson Day, a national holiday to celebrate diversity which is commemorated by every baseball player wheres a number 42 uniform. By sheer coincidence, Marriott Rewards has 42 million members.
Spotted at the premiere: Harrison Ford (who plays Brooklyn Dodgers GM Branch Rickey) with Calista Flockhart, Chadwick Boseman (who plays Jackie Robinson), former L.A. Dodger Owner and L.A. Royalty Peter O’Malley, former Disney President Dick Cook who executive produced the film, Alyssa Milano who is a Dodger fan who blogs at MLblogs, former Yankee baseball player Don Mattingly who is the current manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Jackie Robinson’s widow Rachel Robinson and her entire family.
Executives from Marriott at the premiere include: Gordon Lambourne, SVP Global PR, Marriott International, Rich Toohey, VP, Marriott Rewards, Michelle Lapierre, Sr. Director, Marriott Rewards, Apoorva Gandhi, VP Multicultural Markets and Alliances, Marriott International, and his lovely wife were also on the trip. All executives stayed at the J.W. Marriott downtown next to the Staples Center.
