LACMA Costume Council Conversation Series: Theory Artistic Director Olivier Theyskens and Oscar nominated Costume Designer Arianne Phillips
‘I love that guy’ pronounced a fellow guest following the last slide presented… Theyskens’s personable, completely unpretentious presence held an audience at LACMA enthralled during a presentation that entertained and educated the audience as he walked us through his career; design school drop out, struggling entrepreneur, discovered by Arianne Phillips (Madonna’s go to for all things fashion), nurtured by Polly Mellen (then Vogue fashion editor), appointed to Rochas’ creative director, and then Nina Ricci’s artistic director (both swoon worthy accomplishments), and finally on to Theory where Theyskens has deftly applied his meticulous attention to making ‘real clothes’ just as valuable as couture. “My French grandmother saved her sheets, curtains, laces and odd bits for me” these would go on to influence his particular fabrications with his namesake collection as well as his work with Rochas, Nina Ricci and presently Theory. Olivier’s parting quote: “Life is Pink.” Indeed!
