Shawls for the ladies lined the entree of the erected dinner structure running the length of Levitated Mass at LACMA to celebrate the opening of their new exhibit with James Turnell (which doesnt open til later this month) and the opening of Vacheron Constantin‘s new store (which opened three months ago on Rodeo Drive and was due in for a party). With the HL Group in charge, Vacheron and LACMA teamed up to collect guests from their homes in a fleet of Empire Limo cars and dropped at the new(ish) Rodeo Drive store. The lovely cocktail affair was briefly shut down by the BHFD Fire Marshal before quickly getting back into action. Watchmakers in the back were making live repairs to the fine gears — like performance art. After an hour or so, guests were swept back into their Mercedes and 7-series cars and sped over to LACMA where rumors flew about a one million dollar price tag on the evening.
Acclaimed French chef Alain Passard flew in to cook and prepare the dinner. Guests left with iPads, and ran the gambit from editors, art collectors, watch aficionados, socialites, LA art stars, designers, and friends of LACMA. We were seated between long time friends Shell & Craig Cardon, and new friends Michael & Natali Smith (Michael is also the brother of Jennifer Hale Smith, who founded C Magazine and was also at the dinner). Other guests include LACMADirection Michael Govan & wife Katherine Ross, the lovely Magda Berliner, the still sexy Daisy Duke, Scott Sternberg of Band of Outsiders, designer Gregory Parkinson, Carlota Espinosa who recently launched www.styloot.com (a Google of sorts for clothes), Sutton Stracke, Christine and Dr. Chiu who scurried in just in time for dinner en route from the Carolina Herrara’s annual fundraiser that she hosts every year with Kate Capshaw at the Reg Bev Wil. Across the LACMA campus, also taking place on the same night was the spring acquisitions meeting and dinner for the LACMA design group.
Some guests were coming late who had been up at the Chateau Marmont for Balmain’s dinner; several fashion editors and those social stars who are the types to get sent free clothes in the mail. We were told Balmain dressed the entire party which included Rosie Huntington Whiteley, Liberty Ross, and Nicole Richie, Cher Coutler, Rachel Zoe, and others.
