Microsoft is powering this years Social Media Week in LA, and will host panels throughout the week. Want to know which LA-based companies have been the most creative — and the most successful while doing it? Tumblr will host a storytelling panel, Postmates will discuss building local markets, Thillist’s Adam Rich will discuss commerce and community, Microsoft and DreamWorks will discuss how they are using big data, The Hollywood Reporter‘s VP of Digital Content will explain why viral is a result and not a strategy. And … if you want to hear how easy access to capital is disrupting traditional finance, — well, there’s a panel for that too.
On Monday, the Magenta Agency will cover SEM and SEO in an all-afternoon workshop. On Tuesday, Viacom will host a fireside chat at the Broad Stage with Nancy Frates, mother of Pete Frates, the man behind the ALS ice bucket challenge, and Anthony Carbajal, an ALS patient who shared his message via a viral video. On Wednesday night, Microsoft Mobile Devices will also host an invite-only influencer dinner to explore their Nokia Lumia phones. On Thursday, the new app Sidechef will host a panel at General Assembly on how social media has changed the way we look at food (Good Eggs, a food delivery service that sources from local farms, is on the panel). On Friday, Collab — who represents over 100 of Vine’s most popular and talented creators — will host a Vine workshop.
@SMWLA also selects 25 top influencers each year — this year’s include the likes of Dr. Dre, Jimmy Iovine, and Ian Rogers of Beats (Apple), Tinder’s Sean Rad, Scooter Braun, Uber, Snapchat, and Kevin Spacey. None of these specific names appear on the panelists or hosts listings. A kick-off party on Monday night will celebrate ‘social media’s top 25 influencers’ at 800 MAIN, an ‘Artist-in-Residence’ live/work space in Venice (look for hashtag #social25). See the full schedule. And follow throughout the week at #SMWLA.
