Tesla D Unveiling Last Night at SpaceX HQ at Hawthorne Airport

Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk unveiled a new version of the luxury electric car maker’s Model S sedan last night — the 60D, 85D and the top of the line P85D — that includes all-wheel drive and self-driving “auto pilot” features. The event was open-to-the-public and more than 1,000 people turned up. The current Model S is a rear-wheel-drive car with one motor, but the new version will have two motors — thus the D, as in dual — one powering the front wheels and one powering the rear wheels. The dual motor version of the P85 performance sedan will have a top speed of 155 mph, compared with the current 130 mph. It will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds (see the Instavid below of the new model taking off on the tarmac). The base price for the P85D is $120,000. The three versions: the 60D, 85D and the P85D, come with progressively higher engine power. The P85D will be delivered in North America beginning in December, while the 60D and 85D will be delivered starting in February. Deliveries in Europe and Asia will come in the months to follow. Hardware for auto-pilot features includes long-range radar, a camera that can distinguish stop signs and pedestrians, 360-degree ultrasonic sonar to establish a protective cocoon around the vehicle and can detect blind spots or highway barriers, and all this integrated with GPS and real-time traffic. With this, the car can do lane-keeping, braking, self-parking (automatic parallel parking, or can open your garage door and park itself) and if on private property, you can also summon the car to slowly make its way to you. If you have your calendar turned on, the car can know to meet you — with air conditioning and music turned on. Next steps? Elon wants the car to be able to find the charge connector and plug itself into the car, “sort of like an articulating snake.” After Elon’s big reveal and explanation of the new features, everyone got to test drive the new Teslas.
